Trainer Spotlight - Officer Larry McArdle

K9 Brigade takes great pride in featuring its first trainer on our blog and social media page. Our aim is to shine a spotlight on the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication that trainers bring to the community. These individuals are constantly pushing the boundaries to enhance the training techniques used for working dogs and handlers.
One exceptional trainer we are privileged to showcase is Officer Larry McArdle. His passion for K9 training fuels his relentless pursuit of knowledge and growth in this field. McArdle's commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in the world of K9 training makes him a valuable asset to the working dog community.
We are honored to provide a glimpse into McArdle's story and share his journey as a dedicated trainer. His dedication and expertise contribute significantly to the success of working dogs and their handlers, making a positive impact on the safety and security of our communities.

With the support of his family, Officer Larry McArdle began his K9 career in 2016 and was assigned to K9 Zoey, a narcotic detection German Shorthaired Pointer. This K9 team was responsible for over 150 visitor arrests and even more contraband finds within the NYC Department of Correction.
In 2019, Larry became a New York State Certified Narcotic Instructor and, to this day, has trained over 20 narcotic teams. In 2023, K9 Zoey retired, at which time Officer McArdle took on an additional responsibility as a dual-purpose handler with K9 Simms, a remarkable canine who excels in both patrol and narcotics work. McArdle's passion for patrol duties has grown immensely, thanks in large part to the valuable external training opportunities he actively pursues on a yearly basis.
McArdle deeply appreciates the wealth of knowledge he has acquired from renowned trainers such as Frank Verrico, Cameron Ford, Mike Nezbeth, Carlos Ramirez, Justin Rigney, Mike Lilley, Michele Lyman, and many others. These experts have played a pivotal role in shaping his skills and enhancing his effectiveness as a handler.
It's evident that McArdle's dedication to his role and his commitment to ongoing learning have contributed to his impressive growth as a dual-purpose handler. His partnership with K9 Simms continues to flourish, making a significant impact in their pursuit of maintaining safety and combating narcotics within the  Department of Corrections and our Community.
